The International Cognitive Linguistics Conference (ICLC) is the biennial conference of the International Cognitive Linguistics Association (ICLA). It brings together scholars who share a cognitive-functional view of language, according to which language is seen as an integral part of cognition. In recent years, Cognitive Linguistics has become more and more interdisciplinary, combining insights from typology, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, language history, and other fields.
ICLC has taken place in 13 countries across three continents (Europe, Asia, America). Typically held in July or early August, it attracts around 500 participants, with usually 4-8 plenary talks, theme sessions, and a general session that takes place in parallel slots (usually around a dozen parallel sessions). Previous iterations have often included a PhD student event organized by local PhD candidates and early-career researchers. The social programme typically includes a conference dinner and post-conference excursions; local organizers may also offer pre-conference workshops.
The ICLA Board welcomes submissions of bids to host ICLC19. Please submit your bid to ICLA President Terry Janzen <terry.janzen@umanitoba.ca> and ICLA Secretary Helen Zhao <helen.zhao@unimelb.edu.au> by May 1, 2027. Proposals should include information on the proposed host institution, venue, facilities, accommodations (e.g., signed language interpreting provision), and vision for hosting the conference. Please include names and profiles of the proposed core committee, along with any information on previous events hosted by committee members and/or the proposed venue. Supporting information such as financial planning, suitability of host institution and host city, travel feasibility, and visual aids will help improve the effectiveness of the bid.
Prospective bidders who have questions or would like further information about hosting ICLC19 are welcome to contact ICLA President Terry Janzen at terry.janzen@umanitoba.ca.
